Isaac Luginaah's Message
Welcome to WeCLISH – The Western Centre for Climate Change, Sustainable Livelihoods and Health. This is a Western-governed Network for Economic and Social Trends (NEST) centre.
We conduct collaborative research, build capacity, and mobilize knowledge locally in Canada and worldwide. Our partners include interdisciplinary researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and communities to address the devastating impact of climate change, promote sustainable livelihoods, and improve the health and well-being of the people while sustaining the environment.
Although this Centre, established in 2021, is new, it is built with researchers with decades of experience addressing the Millennium Development Goals 2015 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.
The Centre’s interdisciplinary researchers and students come from the faculties of biology, geography and environment, earth sciences, economics, education, engineering, gender, sexuality and women’s studies, health studies, public health, one health and law, to name a few. Additionally, we partner with the Africa Institute, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR), Rotary Clubs in Canada and universities in Benin, Ghana, and the USA.
In 2024, the Centre launched several collaborative projects, namely, Building Climate Resilient Communities (BCRC) in Canada, Climate Projections for Agriculture (CPA) in Ghana, Malawi, and Tanzania, and Leaving No Food to Waste (LNFW) in Sub-Saharan Africa.
We have created novel opportunities for students, postdocs, members, and collaborators to join WeCLISH Climate Blogs and Climate Cafés. Continuing last year’s success, we are excited about this year’s Graduate Student Conference. Lastly, we are thrilled to join EarthFest London, Canada, 2024 to enhance our connections with local climate change actors.
In all these endeavours, we strive to integrate equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and indigeneity. Coming together, we hope to conduct cutting-edge research to make a difference in climate research, community-building, knowledge creation, mobilization, and actions.
Please join us. We would appreciate it if you could support us through NEST to mitigate and adapt to climate change – the most complex problem of our time.
We look forward to engaging with you,
